One of the most common questions we get is: "When should I start my backyard project?" In Arizona, timing matters more than most people realize — both for the comfort of the construction process and for locking in contractor availability.
The Optimal Window: October Through March
The ideal season to start (and complete) a backyard project in Arizona is October through March. Here's why:
- Temperatures are manageable — construction crews can work full days efficiently without heat-related delays
- Materials perform better during installation — concrete, adhesives, and sealers cure more reliably in moderate temperatures
- You can enjoy the finished space immediately — finishing in early spring means you're using your new outdoor kitchen or patio right when the best outdoor weather begins
- Lower monsoon risk — projects completed before July avoid the challenges of working around Arizona's monsoon season
The most popular timing: Start planning and consulting in September–October, begin construction in November–December, and complete by February–March. You'll be ready for spring and summer enjoyment with the most comfortable outdoor weather of the year.
What About Summer Projects?
Construction in Arizona summers (June–September) isn't impossible — we work year-round — but it comes with real tradeoffs:
- Crew productivity decreases significantly above 105°F — early morning starts and mid-day breaks are required
- Concrete and mortar can dry too quickly in extreme heat, requiring special admixtures and shade tenting
- Monsoon season (July–September) can cause rain delays, especially for base work and concrete pours
- Material lead times may extend as demand for crews remains high year-round
That said, summer can be the right time if you're planning to have it done before fall entertaining season — just build extra buffer time into the schedule.
Book Early: Contractor Availability in the West Valley
The West Valley construction market has tightened significantly. Quality outdoor living contractors are booking 6 to 10 weeks out during peak season (October–February). If you want a project completed before spring, you need to start conversations by September or October at the latest.
We also use the consultation period productively — design review, material selection, permit applications (where required), and HOA approvals all take time. Starting those conversations early means you're not rushed into material decisions you'll live with for 20 years.
When to Avoid Starting
The hardest window to schedule and execute is June through August — not because it can't be done, but because crew availability is tightest, material delays are more common, and monsoon weather adds uncertainty to scheduling. If you have flexibility, wait for October.
